Best Decaf Coffee in India: What to Check Before You Buy

You've decided to try decaf. Maybe you love an after-dinner coffee but hate lying awake at 2 am. You search online and find dozens of bags. Some say "Swiss Water", some say nothing at all. Some are powder, some are beans, some are instant. Which one is actually good?
If you're new to decaf and want the story of how the caffeine comes out, start with what decaf coffee is.
1. Which decaf method is on the label?
A good seller tells you how the caffeine was taken out. You'll see one of four:
Supercritical CO2. Pressurised carbon dioxide dissolves the caffeine and leaves most of the flavour behind. No chemical solvent touches the bean.
Swiss Water. Only water and a coffee extract are used, and filters catch the caffeine. Also solvent-free.
Ethyl acetate, or "sugarcane decaf". A natural solvent made from sugarcane. It often leaves a gentle fruity sweetness. Our sugarcane decaf guide explains it.
Methylene chloride. An effective, approved solvent that is mostly removed during processing and roasting. Labels rarely name it, so "decaffeinated" with no method often means this one.
All four are legal and safe. The method mainly changes taste.
2. Does it meet the FSSAI limit?
"Decaf" doesn't mean zero caffeine. In India, the FSSAI's 2019 coffee standards say roasted decaf can hold at most 0.1% caffeine by mass. Instant decaf is allowed up to 0.3%.
A seller with laboratory results should be happy to share them.
3. Is there a roast date?
Think of bread. You'd never buy a loaf with only an expiry date two years away. Coffee is the same. Look for a roast date, not just a "best before". Every bag of our Decaffeinated Toasted Almond has its roast date printed on it.
Too fresh is a problem too. Beans roasted less than 10 days ago are still letting out gas, and the cup tastes very bitter. We wait 10 days.
Decaf goes stale faster. Steaming makes the bean porous, like a sponge, so air gets in quickly. Buy a smaller bag and finish it sooner.
A named region, or better, a single estate, means someone can trace the beans. Decaffeination takes a little flavour off the top, so you want a specialty coffee bean that has been processed with care.
5. Arabica or robusta?
Look for arabica. It's naturally sweeter and softer than robusta. Robusta is cheaper and harsher, and once the caffeine is gone, the harshness is often all that's left.
6. Which roast level?
Decaf beans start out brown before roasting, so they're easy to roast too far.
Medium to medium dark suits decaf best. You get sweetness and body without the burnt edge. Our guide to light, medium and dark roasts shows how roast changes the cup.
7. Whole bean, powder or instant?
Whole bean stays fresh longest and lets you grind for any brewer. If you have a grinder, buy beans.
Powder (ground coffee) is fine without a grinder. Check the grind matches your brewer. A medium grind suits pour-over, drip and AeroPress. For a French press, espresso, moka pot, South Indian filter or cold brew, buy beans and grind to suit. See which coffee and grind for each brewer.
Instant decaf is coffee that's already been brewed and dried. It's quick, but most of the aroma is lost. If you enjoy the taste of coffee, roasted decaf is a big step up.

What we make
We built our own decaf to tick every line. Decaffeinated Toasted Almond is a 100% arabica natural from Hoysala Estate in Chikmagalur, Karnataka, grown at 1,200 m. It's decaffeinated with supercritical CO2, and laboratory tests show a 99.95% caffeine reduction. We roast it medium dark, and it tastes of green apple, caramel and toasted nuts.
You can buy it as whole beans or as our one all-round powder grind. It won't suit someone who wants a bright, fruity light roast. For a smooth cup after dinner, it's the decaf we'd pour for you.
Common questions
What is the best decaf coffee in India?
A freshly roasted arabica with a named origin, a clear decaf method such as CO2 or Swiss Water, and a medium to medium dark roast. Use the checklist above to judge any bag.
Is decaf coffee powder as good as beans?
It can be, if it's fresh and ground for your brewer. Whole beans stay fresh longer, and decaf goes stale faster than regular coffee, so beans are the safer choice if you own a grinder.
Does decaf coffee have any caffeine?
A little. FSSAI allows up to 0.1% caffeine in roasted decaf, which is at most 15 mg in a 15 g cup, and 0.3% in instant decaf. Well-made decaf sits far below that limit.
